Royston Spire Park

Public Art and Heritage Project

Rosemount Development Trust has regenerated Royston Spire Park, the former site of a Victorian Church, to create an improved and more useful  community open space. The park is immediately adjacent to the Grade A listed Royston Spire, a remnant of the church and a significant landmark on the Glasgow skyline.

Rosemount Development Trust’s Public Art and Heritage project celebrates the heritage associated with Royston and the Spire and the regeneration of the Spire Park for community use. The project was commissioned with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rosemount Workspace and was led by artist Jane McInally, who worked with the community of Royston to uncover stories that could be preserved through artworks.

The 12 mosaic panels now sited in the park are the end result of workshop programmes involving local people of all ages, and represent some of the history of the area.
The project began with open community events, where everyone was invited to come along to find out more and to get involved, and was designed to explore the stories of Royston’s past from the point of view of those who live there now.

Through a variety of art and history workshops, local schools, clubs and groups gathered stories and visual materials from archives at Royston Library, online, and from their own personal and family histories. The first workshops were presented in collaboration with Archeology Scotland who helped trace the past, and introduced research methods and archive materials to the groups. The historical material uncovered provided a good foundation to take into arts workshops which ranged from drawing, collage and design to digital arts and mosaic workshops. As the workshops progressed, participants shared their personal memories and photographs which are also represented in the mosaics.
The community’s ideas and images were interpreted visually by the artist into the final designs, which were then painstakingly created in mosaic by local volunteers.
A huge Thank You to everyone who took part!
